Tesla has taken another major step toward its autonomous-driving ambitions, putting a fleet of steering-wheel-free Cybercabs onto the streets of Austin, Texas.
The vehicles, launched Thursday, are designed to operate without a steering wheel or brake pedals, leaving passengers with no traditional manual controls. The move marks a significant escalation in Elon Musk’s long-running push to turn Tesla into a major player in the robotaxi market.
The Austin launch comes as Tesla tries to close the gap with Waymo, which currently leads the U.S. autonomous taxi market in deployed vehicles and completed rides. Unlike Tesla’s camera-only approach, Waymo and Amazon’s Zoox use additional technologies including radar and lidar to help their vehicles navigate.
Tesla has already operated a robotaxi service in Austin using conventional vehicles equipped with steering wheels and pedals. That service has expanded to several other cities, but the new Cybercab removes the possibility of passengers taking control themselves.
For Musk, the technology represents more than just another Tesla vehicle. The company has increasingly positioned autonomous driving, robotaxis and robotics as key parts of its future as it faces pressure from declining vehicle sales and profits.
But the launch also comes with significant safety questions.
Federal regulators opened an investigation just a day after the Cybercab service began, examining whether the two-seat vehicles comply with federal safety requirements because they lack steering wheels, mirrors and brake pedals normally found in passenger vehicles.
Tesla's approach is also facing skepticism over whether its camera-only autonomous system can reliably handle difficult driving conditions. The company is simultaneously facing several other federal investigations involving its self-driving technology.
The bigger challenge may ultimately be public acceptance.
Tesla is asking passengers to trust a vehicle in which they cannot grab a steering wheel or hit a brake pedal if something goes wrong. Musk is effectively betting that convenience—and the promise of cheaper autonomous transportation—will eventually overcome that hesitation.
If Tesla can scale the Cybercab safely and economically, Austin could prove to be an important early chapter in the company's transition from an electric-car maker toward an autonomous mobility company.
