Apple has finally entered the foldable-phone market, unveiling the iPhone Duo, its first device in the category, after years of watching Samsung and other rivals establish the market.
The bigger story isn't simply that Apple has launched another iPhone. Apple is now betting that foldable phones have moved from a niche category into the mainstream—and that its massive iPhone ecosystem can reshape the market.
The timing is particularly important. Samsung and other Android manufacturers have had years to refine foldable hardware, while Apple has stayed on the sidelines. Now Apple is effectively telling consumers that the foldable form factor is ready for the mainstream iPhone experience.
The move could also put pressure on Samsung and other premium smartphone makers, particularly if Apple's ecosystem, software integration and brand loyalty persuade existing iPhone users to upgrade rather than switch platforms.
Apple's launch comes alongside the iPhone 18 lineup, making the Duo less of an experimental product and more of a new branch of the iPhone family. CBS reports that the foldable starts at $1,999, with preorders beginning Oct. 16 and availability from Oct. 23.
The real question for Apple isn't whether it can build a foldable phone. It's whether millions of loyal iPhone users are willing to pay a premium to change the way they use an iPhone.
